 Grace Not To Sin

by Pastor Ron Isam

Last month in my article I asked for people to let me know if they would like to know more about grace. I received only one response so I will write at least one more time about this incredible subject.

I think it is pretty safe to say that we struggle with the reality that we each commit sins.

A sin can be simply defined as “missing the mark.” It is important for us to see that God has placed a target out there for each of us to hit with the way we live our life. When we miss the mark then we are dealing with the issue of sin.

The real issue is not the sins we commit each day, as much as it is the power of sin in our life.

When we “miss the mark” God does not quit loving us or disown us. However, it is important that we realize that according to Romans 6:5-11 the real issue we need to deal with is the power of sin.

As we looked at before we are participants in the works of the cross. Not only did Jesus die, be buried and raised from the dead for us, we died, was buried and raised with Him.

But, what did we die to? We died to our old sinful nature. The Bible tells us: “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.” Rom 6:6

The purpose of our death with Christ is so that sin might lose its power in our lives. What is the problem then? If sin has lost its power through our identification with the work of Christ on the cross, why do we keep on sinning?

I mean Romans 6:7 goes on to tell us that when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. Why do we continue to miss the mark?

The answer to the sin question is found in Romans 6:11. The Apostle makes it very clear that we are to “consider ourselves dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.”

The word “consider” sometimes translated “reckon” is more than an “okie” term. This is a mathematical term that means to “count it as fact.” don’t know much about math but one thing I do know about it is that it is built on absolutes.

This. My dear friends, is one of those truths. We must consider it a fact, a truth, that we are “dead to the power of sin.” We must die to it. We must not allow it to be our master.

In verse 12, Paul tell us “Do not let sin control the way you live.” and “do not give into sinful desires.” Well, that is easier said than done isn’t it? However, we must recognize that the power to do what Paul encourages in this passage is found in the work of the cross.

The last thing for this article is sound in Romans 6:14. “Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law, instead you live under the freedom of God’s grace.”

This is not something you grunt out, will to happen or any other thing on your own power. You just “consider” it a fact.

We can have power over the sins, when we no longer allow sin not to have power over us.
